Pictou Landing First Nation

Chief Albert Denny
Director of Education Barry Evans
Mi'kmaw Language teacher/s Fran Nicholas

Pictou Landing is located in the northwest of Nova Scotia near Pictou.  The number of residents is four hundred and eighty five housed in one hundred units.  The number of speakers in the community is thirty three from twenty five households.

Pictou Landing has had local control of education for the past four years.  The sixty-four students, eight in daycare and fifty-six in P-6 attend a small school in their community while another forty-one attend public schools at Stellerton and Trenton.  Mi'kmaw is not available in the provincial schools nor in East Pictou High.

Mi'kmaw is used in daycare and taught in grades P-6.  At the elementary level, Mi'kmaw is taught as a first language thirty minutes daily.  It is complimented with culture and music.  There are two fluent Mi'kmaw teachers in Pictou Landing but they are already teaching in regular classes.  This presents a problem for this school which needs a fluent Mi'kmaw language teacher.

Pictou Landing Elementary

Much effort was expended in the past year towards employing a Mi'kmaw Language teacher but to no avail.
