      The Centre of Excellence is located at the Eskasoni Elementary and Junior High School where Mi'kmaw language curriculum material and children's books are published for all interested First Nation schools and/or communities.  Seventeen books have been published to date.  Staff are available by appointment as resource people for various cultural activities at schools in the vicinity and for First Nation schools in Nova Scotia.

Micmac-Maliseet Resource Centre
University of New Brunswick

      The Micmac-Maliseet Resource Centre is located in the second floor library at the University of New Brunswick in the Marshall d'Avery Hall.  The centre consists of periodicals, books, audio-video material about the native people of the Maritimes.  The extensive list can be viewed or accessed by a "database in the Phoenix library system" at the university.  For more information in obtaining the Bibliography you can contact the Micmac-Maliseet Institute by calling (506) 453-3516.

Mi'kmaq Resource Centre

 The Mi'kmaq Resource Centre is located on campus at UCCB in the Student Cultural and Heritage Centre.  Besides artifacts, the centre contains resource materials for persons interested in researching Mi'kmaw language, culture, history, issues, etc.  You can visit the centre on their web site and find out what is available.  The centre also invites contributions that would help build up resource materials.

Native Council of Nova Scotia
Truro,  NS

      Native Council is situated in Millbrook near the former Abanaki Motel.  For some time now, they have been publishing Mi'kmaw language resource material for Mi'kmaq whose first language is English.  They have produced "Micmac Language Learning Workbook" series with audio tapes.  The series focuses on two basic language skills:  listening and speaking.  In addition, the centre has published a map, "Mi'kma'ki" with keys and two mini booklets for school use.

Nova Scotia Department of Education

      Mi'kmaq Services Division of the Department of Education and Culture has developed courses in Mi'kmaq Studies and in Mi'kmaw language grade seven curriculum for non-Mi'kmaw speakers.  The Mi'kmaw Studies course is already developed and in operation in the provincial schools.  Plans are underway to pilot the language course in September of 1999.  The two sites have not yet been selected.  Once the pilots are in place, then development of the grade eight language program will begin.
